How long does a millennial stay at a job?

How long does a millennial stay at a job?

Did you know that those people born between 1980 and 1996 have more probabilities of changing jobs? This is what “How Millennials Want To Work and Live”, a new study carried out by Gallup, claims.

Figures prove that the 60% of this generation is open to new job opportunities. This percentage is the highest of all the generational groups in the labour market.

In the present day, most employees, especially if we talk about qualified jobs, don’t have in mind that traditional idea of past generations of looking for a company where to stay for their whole lives. We no longer believe in the myth of a company for a lifetime. The labour market evolves and, currently, companies have undergone the incorporation of new generations that have brought with them new perspectives and ways of seeing life, including working life. Gallup’s study claims that a 36% of millennials or youngsters belonging to the Y-generation say they will look for a new opportunity in their sector within the following year, in comparison with the 21% of non-millennials.

What takes us to consider a professional change?

This question has as many answers as there are people in the labour market. From the search of new challenges that fit in a better way our skills and knowledge, to an increase of our income with a higher economic remuneration, or a company that gives us the opportunity to grow professionally by training us in a new branch or with a new role that entails a professional promotion. We should add to this list a whole lot of other reasons, since there are many of them for considering a professional change, but the fact of changing jobs may mean to us a vital bid for our professional growth, an investment that entails a clear benefit.

Yes, we’re talking about millennials, as we mentioned with regard to the aforementioned study, but we’re not talking only about them. Every day it is more common that people feel more comfortable when working by projects in which the physical placement is not determining. Nowadays, placement is not as important as it used to be, while the fact of feeling better with oneself, adding value to the company, generating a long-lasting impact, making progress year after year or learning from the person sitting by our side, gain a considerable weight when it comes to employee motivation.

An example. A person who has been working in a stable project at the same company for many years, will end up being caught up in his/her younger colleagues’ eagerness for trying new projects and gaining expertise in new areas or cutting-edge technologies. Getting out of the working comfort zone is easier and more appreciated every day. What about you, have you thought of changing jobs?

Update your CV

Do you know what a recruiter focuses on when analysing your CV? The first thing calling his/her attention is your picture, that’s why you should include a clear image of yourself with a neutral background (remember that only you should appear in the picture). It is indispensable that you add personal data and that you include in this section your full name and the place where you live (there’s no need for you to specify your exact home address).

In addition, it is good that you include a short summary explaining:

  • What you are looking for professionally
  • What you are passionate about in terms of career
  • What you have specialised in
  • What you can offer as added value

This information will allow the interviewer to know whether he/she has an active project that suits your expectations. That’s why it is indispensable that you include in your CV the links to your most outstanding projects, which will help you show and prove your knowledge and working skills. This way, they will get to know how you work and the projects you have been involved in.

Next, you should specify your professional career path. It should be structured chronologically, starting with the most recent position, and mentioning the following:

  • Company name
  • Period of time spent at the company
  • Position
  • Roles or tasks you have carried out
  • Technologies and tools you have used

When detailing your education, you can distinguish between formal education or academic training – senior high school, advanced degrees, university degree and/or master’s degree – and additional or non-formal education – courses, postgraduate studies, language intensive courses, etc.

Right after this section you should include a specific one on technologies or programmes you master and with which you have worked. At this point you must specify the exact level of command of these programmes and technologies. Don’t forget to specify your languages knowledge and levels. You will also need to dedicate some minutes to adapt your CV to each job offer by explaining, for example, your most outstanding achievement in relation with the position you are applying for, and your interest for the given position.

Tips for facing an interview

Would you say that you know how to sell yourself at an interview? That is to say, to explain in a clear way and with a firm attitude what you do and what you are interested in, showing enthusiasm too for the process for which you’re being interviewed. Pay attention to your non-verbal language – avoid nervous and repetitive moves, looking down constantly, etc. – and keep a correct posture. Attitude is everything when it comes to selection processes.  That’s why you should project a good attitude and make sure the interviewer sees you feel confident about yourself. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the answer to some of the questions, it’s all about honesty and transparency.

Normally, interviewers are not technicians, but they have the necessary skills and knowledge for evaluating you correctly. That’s why you should tell them all about you in terms of career, without thinking that “they cannot understand it or that they are probably too young to understand it”. One of the worst things you can do at an interview is to take for granted that your interviewer does not have the necessary level for understanding a given technology or process. In fact, he/she probably knows about it but, even if this is not the case, be open to explaining it to him/her. Doing this proves both that you show interest towards the other person and that you have a high communication capacity. Two very valuable virtues in manager positions, for example.

At BETWEEN we are sure about one thing: individuals are the most important part of the selection process, which is where everything starts. It is the first chapter of a friendship that we hope will last for many years. We bank on frankness in all the stages of our selection processes by providing all the information that any person would need to know, such as, for example, the wage – which is not always displayed in many offers within the sector -. For us, when conducting an interview, it is not enough to find out whether the person we’re interviewing will be able or not to carry out the tasks required by the position. We go deeper than that! It’s in our DNA to provide friendly attention, to put ourselves in our interlocutor’s shoes and to get to know his/her needs and concerns. And this is the only way to offer you the opportunity you really need.

We love getting to know you at interviews. If we finally decide that your profile does not exactly suit the project, don’t worry. If during the selection process you have shown a good attitude, and transparency, you can take for granted that we will contact you for future job opportunities. Because, at BETWEEN, we love you for your brain.
