Culture Fit: the more the affinity, the better

Culture Fit: the more the affinity, the better

Have you heard of the term Culture Fit (or cultural fit)? If you are considering changing your job, this concept will be interesting to you, since the fact that you and your future company have a long and stable relationship could depend on it. Let’s find out what it is!

Culture Fit is a talent recruitment trend, and its aim is that the company and the candidate share the most possible number of values, ideas and principles. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Think about it: we do it with our friends, with our couple; we can go out with people who are very different from us, but we always have certain things in common; interests, goals, etc. so that the relationship works well. Why should it be different with a professional relationship when, if we think about it, we almost spend more time at the office than at home?

In other words, its aim is that the new employee fits to the maximum and as soon as possible the company’s culture, showing his/her values, mission, vision and know-how. In order for this to happen, of course, the company must have a well-defined corporate culture that must be conveyed in the correct way through internal communication tools. It is of vital importance too that all the teams that make up the company share and are part of this corporate culture.

Not all professionals are suitable in the Culture Fit

When we focus our recruitment strategy in the Culture Fit, we need to be conscious that when covering a vacancy, other aspects besides the candidate’s experience, training or skills become relevant too. So, not all professionals with an outstanding resumé will fit our vacancies.

It is true that the first thing the company checks is that both training and skills suit what they are looking for. But there is a second part that needs to be analysed and that will be equally important if we want the prospective employee to be the perfect fit not only for the position, but also for the company’s overall mission, vision, values and corporate culture. It is a far more personal part of the process which is evaluated through personal interviews and/or questionnaires, where recruiters try to make sure that the prospective employee’s philosophy and values match as much as possible the company’s ones.

Culture Fit benefits

Hiring professionals that share values with the company from the very beginning helps create a long-lasting profitable work relationship with a higher productivity index that will benefit both parts. From that moment on, the professional bond between the employee and the company is closer and issues that companies worry about, such as brain-drain rates and the risk of having a bad working atmosphere, decrease

Companies that bet on Culture Fit make a large investment in training, since they prioritise the employee’s affinity with the company over his/her abilities. By doing this, the new employee feels that the company is betting on him/her while his/her confidence level increases.

Despite the fact that in Spain this concept is not widely in use, at an international level we find important media such as the Forbes magazine, that talk about it as a clear measure of success. As you can see, companies that focus their hiring strategy in the Culture Fit, prioritise their employee’s well-being in order to keep the company in balance and obtain better results.

It's your turn now, what do you think of this hiring technique?
