Guidance and studies

If someone wants to study and has finally decided to go ahead with it, the first thing to do is to start the search for the perfect Engineering degree. Knowing how to find out which studies are more suitable for you and having the opportunity of getting to know first-hand experiences of engineers who can tell you where they have studied might be very helpful.

Depending on where you live, you can choose among several fairs to attend. These are some of the most important ones in the Spanish national territory

Student fairs in the Spanish territory

  • FIEP International Graduate Studies Fair (Feria Internacional de Estudios de Postgrado) (since 1997)

It is one of the most important international student fairs. It offers very interesting information and scholarship contests, as well as the opportunity of studying in a foreign country.

  • Saló de l’Ensenyament - Semana de la Formación y Trabajo
From the 14th to the 18th of March in Barcelona (Catalonia).

  • F&P Fira de Formació Professional i Treball de Lleida

From the 19th to the 21st of April in Lleida (Catalonia)

In this student fair you will find all the information regarding vocational training, which might be interesting if you are willing to take a university degree in the future, or if you are looking for information on job prospects.

  • Unitour – International University Fair (Salón de Orientación Universitaria) (since 2006)
This is another of the student fairs you can’t miss out on. According to the organization, almost 700 schools and universities from Spain and abroad meet up at this event.

Barcelona’s Saló de l’Ensenyament - Semana de la Formación y Trabajo

Saló de l’Ensenyament is a fair aimed at high-school and university students where schools and universities meet up with the aim of informing attendees on their facilities and the latest study trends, while trying to recruit young talent who shows interest in taking an Engineering or any other kind of degree.

This fair consists of several teaching congresses taking place in just one building, where the student will be able to decide which university degree or any other technical studies to choose.

These fairs, through activities carried out in the congress, help students make one of the most important choices of their lives as the same time that they familiarise with the science or the engineering world.

Which information will I find at a student fair?

You may need to buy a ticket to attend these kind of fairs, but its price is usually low. You can get them at schools or universities, on the internet or at the box office. These fairs offer a wide range of information on several aspects:

  • Scholarships
  • Studying abroad
  • Student exchanges with other universities
  • Related Engineering studies and degrees
  • New bachelor’s degrees

In some of the fairs students are welcome to exchange impressions with cases of success within the same university and ask them how they have achieved their goal of becoming an engineer.

By attending these kind of events, you can also find information on how to get a scholarship, and you can even participate in a scholarship raffle at some of the schools or universities present in the event.

As a student you must be patient enough when making this decision, since after spending just one hour at one of these events, any kind of engineering degree might sound VERY INTERESTING to you. That’s why you must always:

  • Gather all the information and go over it once the fair is over.
  • Think of your economic situation: Not all degrees are affordable at an economic level, so we must think in the medium and long term how we are going to face this investment.
  • Consider the possibility of studying abroad: Every day there are more exchange programmes that ease the possibility of studying abroad by means of financial aids. Of course, the student needs to find out the information on his/her own beforehand.

Come-on universities

When it comes to choosing a school or university, we must be very careful since, in the end, they are a business like any other and they will always scramble to fill all the available places. The image they project is sometimes overblown or prettied up to get that come-on effect. We shouldn’t get swept up by enthusiasm, it is very important that we patiently analyse the possibilities that a given school or university offers us once the event is over.

Another way of gathering information for deciding which degree to choose is to address a state education department, since the provided information will be more unbiased. Once we have gathered enough information, it will be the time to visit and check personally which school or university better fits our needs and expectations.

Attending one of the several fairs aimed at engineers-to-be is a great challenge that will surely brand for life more than one student.
